What to Pack for a St. John Boat Day!

Written by Katie Zachary

There’s nothing like a day on the water in the Virgin Islands—turquoise water, hidden coves, island hopping, and sunshine from start to finish. But packing for a private boat charter from St. John is different than packing for a beach day. You don’t need much—and packing smart makes the day easier and way more comfortable.

After thousands of charters, here’s our captain-approved checklist of what to bring (and what not to bring) for the perfect USVI or BVI boat day.

✅ Essentials to Bring

These are your don’t-leave-home-without-them items:

  • Passport + cash for customs (BVI trips)
If you’re heading to the British Virgin Islands, bring your passport and $80 per person for customs fees

  • Any snacks or extra drinks you’d like for the day

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (lotion only)
Aerosol sprays damage coral reefs and make the boat deck slippery—leave them behind.

  • Towel + dry change of clothes
A dry shirt on the ride back = bliss.

  • Polarized sunglasses + hat
Polarized lenses cut surface glare and make it easier to spot turtles and rays.

  • Lightweight sun shirt or cover-up
The Caribbean sun is strong even on cloudy days—long sleeves help.

  • Dry bag for your phone
Saltwater and iPhones don’t mix—protect your gear.

  • Cash or card for lunch + island bars
Not all beach bars take cards, especially in remote BVI locations.

  • For any littles- bring the flotation they are most comfortable in- this makes for a better day for EVERYONE
